Companion
Retriever Hunting Challenge
(C.R.H.C.)
An activity with the focus on the typical owner/handler of a retriever
that is a family companion as well as a hunting partner. Designed to
encourage having fun and understanding exactly what you want of your
retriever and not based on obtaining the traditional hunt test/field
trial titles!
1. No professional dog trainers allowed to handle dogs.
2. Dogs currently holding any Hunt Test or Field Trial Titles are not
eligible. All other titles are acceptable.
3. Retrievers or Retriever mix breeds only.
4. Actual hunting scenarios for both field and water hunting when the
venue permits both.
5. Test will be set up and explained by Jim Beverly
6. Scoring will take into consideration all phases of the hunt including
the dog/handler relationship.
7. Handlers must be at least 12 yrs old to participate and be willing
to use their waterfowl calls and handle & fire popper loads in a
12 ga. Shotgun. Primers or other means of producing the sound of the
gun will be used depending on the venue. There will be NO gunfire at
the bird launch location as you would have in a hunt test or field trial.
That would not be a true hunting situation. A short goose or duck call
will be blown to simulate an incoming bird or birds.
8. There will be two levels. Level 1 and 2. Level one will consist of
single retrieves in an actual goose and duck hunting scenario. Level
2 will consist of more difficult scenarios, but again, real hunting
situations.
9. Judging will be done by Jim Beverly
10. Each participant will be assigned a number in each level.
11. Contest scenario will be shown prior to running but not until after
everyone has registered. Each handler must decide which level to enter
based on just the information in #8.
12. Registration fees (if any) and prizes for 1,2, & 3rd will be
decided by sponsoring organization or group.
13. Participants will be encouraged to treat the contest as though they
were actually on a hunt.
14. Dakota goose and duck decoys will be used. Final Approach layout
blinds and mutt hut will be used unless the handler does not use a layout
blind or mutt hut. ComoFlex Systems will be used for duck blind, bird
boy concealment and added props where needed. DTSystem bumpers and in
some cases, bird launchers will be used. Mossy Oak Camo and apparel
is the Camouflage of choice.
15. A DVD will be available for anyone wishing to purchase a copy of
the contest.

...about Jim Beverly
I was married to my beautiful H.S. sweetheart in 1966.
We have three girls and four grandchildren. I have over 45 years experience
in training retrievers and being involved with the waterfowl hunting
industry. My primary education is in engineering and marketing which
in many ways has helped me with the business affairs of running my own
dog training business and marketing my sponsor’s products. God
has Blessed me with the ability to successfully train retrievers using
different techniques, with a non-traditional attitude, that has allowed
me the reputation of not washing out any retriever.
My activities consist of a variety of waterfowl hunting
related venues. My focus at this point in my career is education by
doing seminars and training clinics. I also recently developed a new
activity for the companion retriever and handler called the Companion
Retriever Hunting Challenge or C.R.H.C. I am currently scheduling these
contests for indoor and outdoor events. I am in the process of putting
together two retriever training DVD’s, writing a book explaining
my techniques and putting together a fun book and DVD titled “If
Your Retriever Could Talk”.
My passion for waterfowl hunting has given me an avenue
to help the handicapped and today’s youth. I am responsible for
guiding the handicapped hunters on the Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge
and participate in local schools, churches and DU Greenwing events.
My sponsors are the best in the waterfowl hunting industry.
I am a Dakota Decoy X-Treme Team Staff Member, DTSystem Pro Staffer,
Representative for CamoFlex and NutriSource Dog Food. Mossy Oak is my
camouflage clothing sponsor. I am a volunteer for the Iroquois NWR,
sponsor and volunteer for DU, member of Delta Waterfowl, member of The
Finger Lakes & WNY Waterfowl Assoc. and Lake Plains Waterfowl Assoc.
I make it a priority to use and recommend all my sponsors products when
I do any event. I also carry that same attitude into the field or marsh
when hunting. My mission in life is to help anyone I can with the talents
and opportunities that God has entrusted me with.

"Jim Beverly is a class act. Not only
is he an excellent dog trainer, but he is great with dog owners
as well. It is one thing to be able to train a dog... it is an
entirely another thing to train a dog owner. Jim is great at reading
a dog and their owner. Jim is also one of the finest men I know.
He is honest, kind, and a straight shooter.
