Southern Tier Outdoor Show in Bath attracts some big stars
Cornell Cooperative Extension of Steuben County's 5th annual Southern Tier Outdoor Show, scheduled for October 8-9 at Wilkins RV in Bath has booked some pretty famous talent for this year's show. Features will be Jarod Miller, host of TV's Animal Explorations with Jarod Miller and Cathy Turner, a two time Olympic Gold Medal winner.
Town of Boston native Jarod Miller has turned a childhood dream into a fruitful, busy television career. Instead of attending his own high school graduation, he was in New York City preparing for an appearance on the “Today” show. Zoologist Jim Fowler, of “Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom,” was presenting one of Miller’s ring-tailed lemurs, with Miller as an assistant.
A decade later, the now 33-year-old Miller and his animals premiered his “Animal Exploration With Jarod Miller” via syndication on 200 stations nationwide. The show now airs on WETM-2 Saturdays at 9:00 a.m.
The western New Yorker has realized a dream that has driven him since he was 4 years old and mesmerized by Marlon Perkins, the original television zoologist. After years of helping television zookeepers such as Fowler and Jack Hanna present animals to the likes of Conan O’Brien, Rachael Ray and David Letterman – just to name a few – Miller started getting his own spots.
During the summers during college, Miller was already working for Hanna, another famed television zoologist, at the Cleveland Zoo and in network television. "It’s unheard of for someone to obtain their federal wildlife licenses as early as Miller did," said Hanna, who Miller credits as one of his main inspirations and mentors. "But Miller was willing to do the work, and when his chance came," Hanna said, "Miller was ready. All it takes is one break in this business, and he got a good break,” Hanna said. “He started from the ground up. He’s taken care of animals, fed and cleaned them, gone through the whole thing, you know. It’s a lot of work. His life is his animal world.”Cathy Turner is a two-time Olympic Gold Medalist in short track speedskating (1992 and 1994), and a Silver and Bronze Medalist as anchor of the 3000m Relay Team. She is one of only two people ever to win Gold Medals in consecutive Winter Olympic Games. With a total of four medals, she ranks third for the most medals ever won by a Winter Olympian.
Multi-talented and outgoing, Cathy has combined her Olympic success and her amazing story to become one of the most marketable athletes in the industry today.
Nine years after retiring from her sport to pursue a professional singing career, Cathy returned to speedskating and competed in the 1992 Olympic Games. Her childhood dream of winning an Olympic gold medal was now within her grasp. Critics scoffed at the notion that a 26 year old woman could overcome such a tremendous setback, especially being away from the sport so long. Cathy proved them wrong by making her dream a reality, winning both gold and silver medals in the 1992 Winter Games in Albertville, France. Draped in the American flag, Cathy took her much-deserved "Victory Lap" with the whole world watching.
She retired immediately after the 1992 Games, only to make a stunning comeback just seven months prior to the 1994 Winter Games in Lillehammer, Norway. Once again, her amazing determination and strong will prevailed as she added two more medals to her collection - a gold and bronze. Once again, Cathy challenged herself and came out of retirement in 1998 to compete in her third Olympics in Nagano, Japan.
Cathy recently wrote a chapter in a book entitled, Awaken the Olympian Within. Her chapter is entitled "See it, believe it, be it." To Cathy, "See it, believe it, be it" were essential steps in becoming her own vision and fulfilling her lifelong dream.
Other features at the show include the Wildlife Defenders, Talons: A Bird of Prey Experience, and Jim Beverly's Companion Retriever Hunting Challenge.

Each wonderful Raptor has a unique personality and a connection to your heart!Jim Beverly of Oakfield in Genesee County launched the Companion Retriever Hunting Challenge two years ago. It is not for professional handlers and highly polished high-octane birtd dogs. It's for the weekend waterfowl hunter and his faithful canine sidekick.
Jim says, "The C.R.H.C. allows a person to have fun and enjoy the experience without any stress or feeling of intimidation. The challenge is set up as a real hunting situation and not judged on things such as style, trainability, and some of the other things that have nothing to do with being a successful retriever and companion." Beverly has been training retreivers for 45 years and is working on a instructional DVD of his training techniques titled "If Your Retriever Could Talk."
The show runs from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 both days, and admission is just $5.00 per car, no matter how many people are in the car. For further details on the show, visit www.southerntieroutdoorshow.com or like their facebook page at www.facebook.com/southerntieroutdoorshow.

"The CRHC are so fun to participate in, I have competed with my old yellow lab, and we have both had a blast. It is amazing to see how my own dog does as well as getting to see what other more seasoned dogs can accomplish. At the end of the day, it is just a great day in the field with our number one hunting partners."
- Ryan
"The CRHC is exactly what I am looking for to teach me and my pup alike where our weak points are. It is a relaxed atmosphere where my boy and I always win even if we take last." - Marcus
"I thought the CRHC was fairly judged and the course was easy to understand. The best part for my father and i was to talk to other people that have been involved in hunting and working with dogs for a long time." -
Brian
